Itinerary

  1. 1
    0:00Design and briefing

Meet your silversmith, look through sample pieces, and sketch what you want to make — most people choose a ring, a pendant or a pair of earrings. The teacher will tell you honestly whether a design is achievable in two hours.

  2. 2
    0:20Sawing and shaping

Cut your shape from a sheet or length of silver with a jeweller’s saw, then file and shape it. This is the slowest part and the one that decides how the finished piece looks.

  3. 3
    0:55Soldering

Join the piece with a torch and solder — closing a ring, attaching a bail to a pendant, or fixing a decorative element. The teacher works alongside you for this step.

  4. 4
    1:25Texturing and stone setting

Add texture by hammering, stamping or filing, and set a stone if your design calls for one. This is where two people making the same shape end up with completely different pieces.

  5. 5
    1:45Polishing and finishing

Polish the piece up to a mirror finish, a brushed finish or an oxidised black, then take it home in a box. You keep what you make, and it is finished before you leave.

About the Silver Class Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is an outdoor island. Almost everything people come for — Kelingking, Broken Beach, the manta cleaning stations, Crystal Bay — depends on the weather and the sea, and when the swell comes up or the rain sets in there is very little left on the list.

This is the thing that still runs. Two hours at a bench, indoors, making a piece of jewellery, on a day when the boats are not going out. Travellers who have had a manta trip cancelled book it as a direct replacement, and it is the reason the class exists on the island at all.

It is worth booking ahead rather than turning up. Nusa Penida has a fraction of the studio capacity of Ubud or Seminyak, and when weather cancels the boats, demand for the few indoor options arrives all at once. Message on WhatsApp before you cross rather than after.

For anyone staying on Penida for two or three nights, it also breaks up an itinerary that is otherwise all cliffs and viewpoints, and it works as an afternoon after a morning of snorkelling when the light has gone hard and the sites are crowded.

Safety, weather and cancellation

Tours run in light rain — the tracks are at their best when they are wet. If conditions are genuinely unsafe the activity is rescheduled or refunded in full, and that call is made by the guide on the day.

Free cancellation at least 1 day before the start. No refund less than 1 day before the start. No cancellation once the voucher has been used.

Silver Class Nusa Penida questions

What can you do on Nusa Penida when it rains?

The Nusa Penida Silver Class is the main indoor activity on the island: a two-hour silversmithing workshop costing IDR 500,000 per person, which runs regardless of the weather when boat trips and viewpoints are washed out.

What happens if my Nusa Penida manta snorkeling trip is cancelled?

When swell cancels a manta snorkeling trip at Nusa Penida, the Silver Class on the island is the usual replacement, since it runs indoors. Capacity is limited, so it is worth messaging on WhatsApp as early as possible.

Should I book the Nusa Penida silver class in advance?

Yes. Nusa Penida has far fewer studio places than Ubud or Seminyak, and demand for indoor activities spikes whenever weather cancels the boats. Book on WhatsApp before crossing to the island rather than after arriving.

How much is the silver jewellery class in Nusa Penida?

The Silver Class in Nusa Penida costs IDR 500,000 (about USD 32) per person for a two-hour workshop, including up to 5 grams of silver, all tools, an English-speaking silversmith and the finished piece to take home.

Do I need any experience to take a silversmithing class in Bali?

No experience is needed for the Silver Class. It is designed for complete beginners, and the teacher works alongside you for the technical steps such as soldering. Most people finish a ring or a pendant within the two hours.

What can you make in a two-hour silver class?

In a two-hour Silver Class most people make a ring, a pendant or a pair of simple earrings. More complex designs are possible but the silversmith will tell you at the start whether what you have in mind fits the time.

How much silver is included in the class?

Each Silver Class booking includes up to 5 grams of silver. Pieces that need more silver than that are charged for the extra material at the studio, and you keep whatever you make.

Do I keep the jewellery I make in the silver class?

Yes. You keep whatever you make in the Silver Class, and it is finished, polished and boxed before you leave — there is nothing to collect later and nothing to post home.

What is the minimum age for the silver jewellery class?

The minimum age for the Silver Class is 10, because the workshop involves a soldering torch and sharp tools. Younger children can come along and watch a parent work, but cannot take a bench themselves.
