Itinerary

  1. 1
    0:00Design and briefing

Meet your silversmith, look through sample pieces, and sketch what you want to make — most people choose a ring, a pendant or a pair of earrings. The teacher will tell you honestly whether a design is achievable in two hours.

  2. 2
    0:20Sawing and shaping

Cut your shape from a sheet or length of silver with a jeweller’s saw, then file and shape it. This is the slowest part and the one that decides how the finished piece looks.

  3. 3
    0:55Soldering

Join the piece with a torch and solder — closing a ring, attaching a bail to a pendant, or fixing a decorative element. The teacher works alongside you for this step.

  4. 4
    1:25Texturing and stone setting

Add texture by hammering, stamping or filing, and set a stone if your design calls for one. This is where two people making the same shape end up with completely different pieces.

  5. 5
    1:45Polishing and finishing

Polish the piece up to a mirror finish, a brushed finish or an oxidised black, then take it home in a box. You keep what you make, and it is finished before you leave.

About the Silver Class Seminyak

Seminyak is where people come to shop. Eat Street and the boutiques around Petitenget are full of silver — most of it made somewhere else and marked up considerably by the time it reaches a display case.

This is the version where you make it. Two hours at a bench, five grams of silver, and a piece that costs about what a mid-range shop ring would, except you cut it, soldered it and polished it. As a souvenir it holds up rather better, and as an alternative to another afternoon of browsing it is a more interesting way to spend the time.

Practically, Seminyak is one of the easiest locations to reach. Most visitors staying here are within a ten-minute drive of the studio, and the class runs at 09:00, 11:00, 13:00 and 15:00, so it fits either side of a beach club afternoon or before dinner. It is entirely indoors and air-conditioned, which in Seminyak in the middle of the day is not a small consideration.

It suits shoppers, couples looking for something to do together that is not another restaurant, and anyone who wants to leave Bali with one object they actually made.

Safety, weather and cancellation
