Itinerary
- 10:00Design and briefing
Meet your silversmith, look through sample pieces, and sketch what you want to make — most people choose a ring, a pendant or a pair of earrings. The teacher will tell you honestly whether a design is achievable in two hours.
- 20:20Sawing and shaping
Cut your shape from a sheet or length of silver with a jeweller’s saw, then file and shape it. This is the slowest part and the one that decides how the finished piece looks.
- 30:55Soldering
Join the piece with a torch and solder — closing a ring, attaching a bail to a pendant, or fixing a decorative element. The teacher works alongside you for this step.
- 41:25Texturing and stone setting
Add texture by hammering, stamping or filing, and set a stone if your design calls for one. This is where two people making the same shape end up with completely different pieces.
- 51:45Polishing and finishing
Polish the piece up to a mirror finish, a brushed finish or an oxidised black, then take it home in a box. You keep what you make, and it is finished before you leave.

About the Silver Class Sidemen
Sidemen is what people mean when they say Ubud used to be like this. It is a green agricultural valley in Karangasem with rice terraces running up both sides, Mount Agung at the head of it, and a handful of guesthouses instead of a town.
It is also a craft valley. Sidemen is known for hand weaving — endek and the silk-and-gold songket that takes weeks on a backstrap loom — and there are working weaving houses you can visit. Adding a silversmithing bench to a day here is entirely consistent with what the valley already does, and it is the location where a craft class feels least like an activity and most like the local trade.
The trade-off is distance. Sidemen is around 90 minutes from Ubud and two hours from the southern beach towns, so this makes sense if you are staying in the valley or passing through eastern Bali rather than as a day trip from Seminyak.
