About Uluwatu

The Bukit peninsula is a raised limestone plateau hanging off the southern tip of Bali, and it behaves completely differently from the island north of it. Rain drains straight through the rock, so there is no deep mud here. What you get instead is hard white track, dust, dry scrub, cactus and long open sight lines.

The ATV route runs through quarry cuts where limestone blocks have been carved out of the plateau, leaving vertical white walls, then across open grazing land to high ground where the Indian Ocean shows on the horizon.

For anyone staying in the south this is the practical choice. From Uluwatu, Bingin, Padang Padang, Jimbaran or Nusa Dua the base is 15 to 30 minutes away rather than the 90-minute drive to Ubud, which leaves the rest of the day free for a surf or the sunset kecak at the temple.

Getting there

The Uluwatu ATV base is 15 to 30 minutes from Uluwatu, Bingin, Padang Padang, Jimbaran and Nusa Dua, about 45 to 60 minutes from Seminyak and 60 to 80 minutes from Canggu. The turn-off is an unsealed lane off the main Uluwatu road.

Best time to go

The Bukit is bright and shadeless, so morning departures are more comfortable than midday. Because limestone drains fast, this is also the track that copes best with the wet season.

Uluwatu questions

Is there ATV riding near Uluwatu?

Yes. The Uluwatu ATV tour crosses the limestone plateau of the Bukit peninsula for 90 minutes and costs IDR 600,000 per person, including a guide, helmet, boots, gloves and body protector. It is the closest ATV track to the southern surf beaches.

What is there to do in Uluwatu besides surfing?

Uluwatu offers ATV riding across the Bukit limestone at IDR 600,000 per person, a two-hour silversmithing class at IDR 500,000, and the kecak fire dance performed at Uluwatu Temple each evening at sunset.

Is the Uluwatu ATV ride different from the Ubud one?

Yes, substantially. The Uluwatu ATV ride is dry, dusty limestone with open sight lines and ocean views, while the Ubud tracks are jungle, rice terrace and deep mud. Uluwatu costs IDR 600,000 and Ubud IDR 500,000.

Can I ride an ATV in Uluwatu during the rainy season?

Yes. The Uluwatu ATV track drains faster than any other in the range because limestone absorbs rainfall, so the surface firms up rather than turning to deep mud. Rides run in light rain.
